GOLDEN OPEN Gels, Mediums, and ThinnerOPEN Acrylic Gel (Gloss and Matte) has a slightly softer feel than our Regular Gel (Gloss) and the same consistency as OPEN colors. It can be used for glazes and to extend the paints while maintaining working properties of OPEN acrylics. OPEN Acrylic Medium (Gloss and Matte) has a lower viscosity and is used to extend paint and maintain properties when a more fluid mixture is desired to increase flow. OPEN Gels and Mediums are compatible with Golden Heavy Body and Fluid Acrylic colors, as well as regular acrylic gels and mediums and will increase open time while altering their consistency. OPEN Thinner contains no binders and is used to thin the consistency of paint mixes without altering open time, or to maintain and adjust the workability of colors on the palette without the use of water mist and moisturizing palettes. |

| Additives Acrylic Flow Release GOLDEN Acrylic Flow Release is an additive used to reduce surface tension of the water in the acrylic emulsion, therefore increasing the slickness and flow of the paint. It is effective for achieving rich stains on a porous surface. Health Labeled (HL) Product. Not for use by children.Acrylic Flow Release Product Information & Application Sheet. Retarder GOLDEN Retarder is an additive used to increase the open (drying) time of acrylic paints. Useful for "wet in wet" techniques and reducing skinning on the palette. | ![]() |
Golden Open Acrylics Basics
Golden Acrylic Paints newest line of paints, Golden OPEN Acrylics are a new type of artist acrylic paint with just the right amount of retarder to allow a highly increased amount of "open time" keeping your paints wet on the pallet and on the canvas for far longer while staying consistent in color and quality with Golden Heavy Body Acrylics.
GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics (Shop OPEN Acrylics) feature a unique and remarkably relaxed set of working properties that facilitate blending, softening, shading, glazing and fine detail. The unique properties of OPEN Acrylics allow them to be used with natural fiber brushes and for a range of techniques including portraiture, plein air painting, monoprinting, and screenprinting.
Use OPEN Mediums and Thinner to maintain the maximum working time of OPEN Acrylics. OPEN Acrylic Gel (Gloss) is recommended to adjust color strength and translucency while maintaining consistency. OPEN Acrylic Medium (Gloss) is formulated to a lower viscosity for a more fluid mixture with increased flow. OPEN Thinner contains no binder and is used to maintain and adjust the workability of colors on the palette without the use of water mist and moisturizing palettes. Golden Acrylic Digital Ground
GOLDEN Digital Grounds (Shop Digital Grounds) are ink-receptive coatings intended for use with ink-jet printers. They allow the artist to coat and subsequently print over a large variety of substrates including paper, canvas, metal and acrylic paints, using ordinary computer printers and inks.
There are three types of Digital Grounds available:
Digital Ground White (Matte) -- A semi-opaque white ground suitable for printing onto a large variety of porous and non-porous surfaces. The smooth and absorbent surface allows printing inks to dry rapidly, making it an ideal starting product for artists exploring digital printing. (read more)
Digital Ground Clear (Gloss) -- A clear gloss ground for use on most porous surfaces where clarity is desired to view underlying materials. (read more)
Digital Ground for Non Porous Surfaces -- A clear gloss ground for coating non-porous surfaces, such as plastic and metal, when clarity is desired. (read more)

BISMUTH VANADATE YELLOW
The inorganic pigment has the opacity and lightfastness of a Cadmium color,
without the typical UV/moisture sensitivity, making it an ideal yellow for
outdoor use. |

TRANSPARENT BROWN IRON OXIDE
This color rounds out the lines of browns, as it fills a color space between Burnt
Sienna and Burnt Umber, but with a cleaner, redder undertone. Imagine a dark

PERMANENT MAROON
This color has been on our wish list for quite some time since we stopped
production of the beloved Naphthamide Maroon, due to the unavailability of the
pigment back in 1997. While Naphthamide Maroon was a single pigment color,
Permanent Maroon is a blend. This smokey, reddish violet color dries with a
sheen that is between glossy and semi-gloss. |

CHROMIUM OXIDE GREEN DARK
A darker and cooler version of Chromium Oxide Green, with very good
opacity. In addition to offering a cool, opaque single pigment color for fine
artists, this color is closer than our regular Chromium Oxide Green to what is
sometimes referred to as "European Green". |
Alternative Pigments
- Interference Paints (shop Interference Paint) Surfaces painted with these colors look different depending on the angle at which they are viewed and the angle of the light striking the surface. These paints contain tiny flakes of mica, coated with titanium dioxide, which enable the paint to refract its complement color. They can be used alone, mixed with non-interference acrylic paints, or layered translucently over an already painted area. Interference paints can also be used for fabric and airbrush techniques.
- Iridescent Paints (shop Iridescent Paint) These paints are like interference paints but are opaque. They do not have as large of a color refraction but produce a shimmery metallic effect.
- Metallic Paints These paints actually include metal particles that simulate the luster of such metals as gold, silver and bronze. These pigments are available in Acrylic, Oil and Watercolor Lines.
- Fluorescent Paints These paints appear to glow as they absorb light of one wavelength and re-emit it at a different wavelength. These paints are not lightfast and should not be used for permanent painting. These pigments are more popularly used in airbrushing.
Acrylic Medium Basics
Although acrylics can be thinned with water, they lose quality in the process. Mediums can aid in the flow of acrylics without changing the hue or intensity of the color. In fact, acrylics can be heavily manipulated with the bevy of new mediums now on the market. Gels will thicken acrylics for an impasto effect, retarders slow drying time, and tinting mediums alter hue and/or color intensity.
Amazing Acrylics
Acrylics are an extraordinarily versatile media. They can be used on almost any surface and will dry to be waterproof in only minutes. Use them to create lushly textured impastos or subtle watercolor-like effects. They clean up easily with water and require no toxic or noxious solvents. Colors will not yellow with age.
Available in tubes, jars and bottles, acrylic paints come in two grades, professional and student. Professional paint is more highly pigmented than student, which uses less expensive pigments and extenders so it will fit the student budget.
