Molding a Smooth Painting Surface

Here's an interesting tip!! Are you an artist that prefers the smooth wood texture for painting, but wish you could get a little give from your surface? Try using Molding Paste (Shop) to smooth your surface! Below is a video from Creative Coldsnow TV to show you how!

Create a smooth solid texture for painting using artist canvas! Molding Paste is flexible and won't crack, creating a perfect smooth surface to paint on for artists that prefer smooth plate surfaces. Covering your canvas with molding paste fills the gaps from the cotton canvas texture. Sealing the molding paste with acrylic paint settles the paint in the remaining texture making it even smoother. Finally one last coating of molding paste with a background color will create a beautiful surface smooth enough for artist paint to glide on.

Golden OPEN Acrylic Mediums

OPEN Mediums and Additive

GOLDEN OPEN Gels, Mediums, and Thinner

OPEN Acrylic Gel (Gloss and Matte) has a slightly softer feel than our Regular Gel (Gloss) and the same consistency as OPEN colors. It can be used for glazes and to extend the paints while maintaining working properties of OPEN acrylics.

OPEN Acrylic Medium (Gloss and Matte) has a lower viscosity and is used to extend paint and maintain properties when a more fluid mixture is desired to increase flow.

OPEN Gels and Mediums are compatible with Golden Heavy Body and Fluid Acrylic colors, as well as regular acrylic gels and mediums and will increase open time while altering their consistency.

OPEN Thinner contains no binders and is used to thin the consistency of paint mixes without altering open time, or to maintain and adjust the workability of colors on the palette without the use of water mist and moisturizing palettes.

Acrylic Paint Additives

Info From: Golden Paints
Additives  Acrylic Flow Release GOLDEN Acrylic Flow Release is an additive used to reduce surface tension of the water in the acrylic emulsion, therefore increasing the slickness and flow of the paint. It is effective for achieving rich stains on a porous surface. Health Labeled (HL) Product. Not for use by children.Acrylic Flow Release Product Information & Application Sheet. Retarder GOLDEN Retarder is an additive used to increase the open (drying) time of acrylic paints. Useful for "wet in wet" techniques and reducing skinning on the palette.
Polymer Mediums GOLDEN GAC (short for Golden Artist Colors) Specialty Acrylic Polymers are based on 100% acrylic polymer emulsions. The GACs are useful as mediums or modifiers of acrylic paints. GACs can be blended with GOLDEN Acrylic Paints to extend the paint, regulate transparency, create glazes, increase gloss, reduce viscosity or improve adhesion and film integrity. The GAC polymers can also be used for binding pigment solids for various effects and surfaces. Unlike the other GOLDEN Mediums and Gels, GAC Acrylic Polymers have only a minimum amount of thickeners, levelers, defoamers and surfactants to ensure good film formation. Shop Acrylic Additives

Golden Paints Acrylic Fiber Paste

Another video about Golden Acrylic Mediums on Creative Coldsnow Youtube

Fiber Paste offers a dry film that has the appearance of rough handmade paper. Skimming the product with a wet palette knife can make a smoother surface. When dry, it has an off-white color and is very absorbent, making it ideal for use with acrylic and watercolor washes or inks. It has a thick, somewhat sticky feel in the wet state. Priming Artist Canvas with Acrylic Gesso

Every once in a while we post some light instructions on how artists can further take projects into their own hands! This week: Priming Artist Canvas with Acrylic Gesso. Provided by: Tara Fredrix Canvas
How to Prime Canvas with Acrylic Gesso
Materials Needed
· Fredrix® Acrylic Gesso · Fine Grit Sandpaper · Fredrix® Unprimed Cotton or Linen Canvas · Brush, Paint Pad, Squeegee or Painting Knife Thinning: · If a thinner gesso is desired, it may be thinned with up to one-third water without adversely affecting performance. ·  For increased paint adhesion and flexibility thin with equal parts water and acrylic matte medium. Single vs. Multiple Coats: One layer of gesso on cotton duck may be adequate, but could expose pinholes or uncovered areas.  At least two coats are recommended.  A second layer evens out the gesso and produces a smoother surface.  Three coats results in even less texture for smooth painting with watercolor or for artist portraits.  Two or more layers are recommended if oil paint is to be used over acrylic gesso.  Once dry, the gesso can be sanded for an even smoother painting surface, if desired. Application: 1. Using a half-circular motion, apply gesso with a large gesso brush, painting knife, squeegee or house paint pad to stretched unprimed canvas.  Brush gesso into weave of the canvas from center –outward- then sides – then overlap on the backside, covering the staples and cut canvas edges.  Clean up with warm water. 2. Let dry, Canvas will tighten during gessoing, and will relax slightly when fully dry. 3. Lightly sand with fine grit sandpaper.  Apply second layer. Let dry. 4. Repeat light sanding.  Let dry 24 hours before painting. Sagging and Wrinkles after Gessoing 5. If small ripples or indentations occur, dampen the affected area with a damp sponge (do not saturate).  Let dry n a well-ventilated area. 6. Large wrinkles should be removed by using canvas pliers and re-stretching the affected area, or the entire canvas if necessary. *Avoid using pegs (keys) to take out wrinkles of unprimed stretched canvas.  It may throw frame out of square or damage canvas.  Remove staples or tacks in affected area and re-stretch the wrinkled portion.  Pegs are used to tighten slightly sagging canvas after it has been sized, gessoed or painted.

Golden Mediums – Crackle Paste

Another video posted on our sister site's Youtube Channel! Creative Coldsnow

GOLDEN Crackle Paste is a thick, opaque cracking material designed to develop deep fissure-like cracks as it cures. The size and extent of the crackle pattern is dependent on many factors, including the thickness of application and the environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity and air flow) during drying.

These are informative videos from the Creative Coldsnow Youtube Channel! Another resource in our art supplies information network. These videos originally came from Golden Acrylic Paints.

GOLDEN Clear Tar Gel is designed to yield a pully, tar-like feel, but in a colorless gel. This gel has an extremely resinous and stringy consistency, which makes it feel very different than other acrylics. Useful for generating fine detailed lines by "dripping" it over surfaces, as it continuously flows from palette knives or other tools. Blends with all GOLDEN Acrylic colors (though Fluids work best) to offer a full range of colors with which to work. Creative Coldsnow carries the entire line of Golden Acrylic Gel Mediums. Over the next couple of weeks we will look at Golden Acrylic Mediums, we hope to provide informative videos on these mediums on atleast a weekly basis. First up: Golden Acrylic Ground! (Shop Acrylic Ground)

Acrylic Ground is a product that provides a desired surface on which to paint. Grounds can provide a surface to apply pastels, watercolor or other products. GOLDEN makes two specialty grounds: Absorbent Ground and Acrylic Ground for Pastels. Absorbent Ground is applied to any gessoed support and mimics the absorbency of watercolor paper. Acrylic Ground for Pastels contains a gritty solid to allow pastels and other drawing media to adhere to the surface. Many other GOLDEN products can be used as effective grounds.
